So about a month ago, I got engaged! My fiancé and I have known each other for 6 years and people ask us our story all the time. I thought it would be fun to illustrate it using -spmap- via Stata on my blog.
We met in the summer of 2009 at the University of California, Santa Barbara during the American Economic Association's (AEA) Summer Training Program. I had just graduated from UC Irvine and he was visiting from the University of Florida. [If you don't know what the AEA Summer Training Program is, it's a program focused on diversifying the field of Economics. In 2009 it was held at UCSB and it was a 6-8 week intensive curriculum that was designed to "help talented minority undergraduate students learn skills and conduct research in economics in preparation for studies at the doctoral level" (now it's at UNM.)]
In the beginning of 2010 we both got jobs as research assistants at the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the University of Florida. We lived in Florida until we both attended graduate school. Side note: we adopted the best puppy in the whole world while living in Florida! (Thank you, Puppy Hill Farm Animal Rescue).
In the summer of 2011 he moved to San Diego to pursue a Ph.D in Economics and I moved to Durham to pursue a Master's in Economics. During the summer of my first year, I took an internship at the Fed in D.C. After graduating from Duke, I got a job as an education policy researcher in San Francisco. Though San Francisco is still in the same state as San Diego, I'd still consider that semi-long-distance so I job hunted after being there for almost a year and landed a job in Los Angeles in litigation consulting. I worked at that firm for a year, and finally moved to San Diego in late 2014. I've been living here since then, and it truly is America's Finest City--you can't beat the weather and the dog-friendliness.
The looping gif of maps above shows a lot of movement (mostly on my part) throughout the U.S and California. The pink triangles represent me by myself, the blue triangles represent my fiancé by himself, and the green diamonds are when we are both in the same city. I made these using spmap in Stata with the -point- and -arrow- options. The reason it took me so long to get to San Diego is because of its job market...there are few positions, especially relating to economics.
Well, that's our story in a nutshell :) I hope you enjoyed it and I hope the maps helped!
